Delta buys crude oil directly, often at market prices, and then refines it into jet fuel. While the Trainer Refinery supplies only about 80% of Delta's East Coast fuel needs, representing roughly 30-35% of its total consumption, this portion is strategically critical. It helps stabilize a significant chunk of its fuel expense, allowing the airline to better forecast and manage one of its most volatile costs.

For example, when international events cause crude oil prices to spike, the cost of jet fuel typically follows suit, often with an even greater premium due to refining and distribution costs. The Trainer Refinery helps Delta mitigate this by effectively "insourcing" some of that refining margin. While other airlines are purely price-takers in the jet fuel market and rely on financial hedges (which come with their own costs and risks), Delta has a physical hedge. Its profitability is also tied to the crack spread, which can narrow.
