Much of this growth, the company clarified, is directly attributable to massive deals in its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) division, fueled by the insatiable demand for AI compute. Yet, for all the headlines celebrating Oracle's AI infrastructure prowess, an undeniable reality persists: the ChatGPT parent, OpenAI, still accounts for the lion's share of that burgeoning backlog.
Indeed, sources close to the company indicate that OpenAI alone contributes well over 60% of the AI-driven portion of Oracle's backlog. While this partnership has been a monumental win for Oracle, validating its OCI platform as a serious contender against the traditional hyperscalers, it also casts a distinct shadow of client concentration. It's a double-edged sword: a testament to OCI's capabilities, but also a potential vulnerability if OpenAI's needs or allegiances were to shift down the line.
Oracle's strategy has been clear for some time: carve out a niche in the high-performance, cost-effective AI infrastructure space. They've invested heavily in NVIDIA GPU clusters, designing OCI to handle the most demanding machine learning training and inference workloads. This focus has paid off handsomely, attracting some of the biggest names in the generative AI boom. The partnership, initially revealed by Oracle Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison, involves OpenAI utilizing OCI for certain AI training and inference workloads, effectively diversifying its compute infrastructure beyond Microsoft's Azure. This move, analysts suggest, was driven by a combination of factors: OCI's competitive pricing, its raw performance for GPU-intensive tasks, and potentially a desire by OpenAI to ensure redundancy and avoid over-reliance on a single provider, even its primary investor.
However, the sheer scale of OpenAI's contribution to Oracle's backlog—which represents future revenue from signed contracts—raises eyebrows among market watchers.
